The Arawak Indians had been smoking their cigars for over 500 years before an obscure Italian sea captain working for the Spanish Crown named Cristoforo Colombo and his cadre of three ships blundered into the island he thought was India in October of 1492. For them, the smoking of cigars – made from the dried, rolled leaves of a local plant that the Spaniards mistakenly heard being called tabakka (the tabakka was actually a kind of pipe) was a formal ritual, done only on special occasions – such as the arrival of visitors from a faraway place.
Of course, the Arawaks had no way of knowing that these strange people with the light skins and pale eyes had come not as visitors, but as invaders who would ultimately destroy them, even as they presented them with the gift of what would come to be known as cigarros.
The Arawaks have long since disappeared from Hispaniola – now known as Dominica – but the thousand-year-old tradition of making and smoking cigars survives as Dominican cigars. You can learn much more about them at CigarsDominican.com.
The cigar-smoking community may disagree about what brand of cigar represents the pinnacle of smoking pleasure (this is a matter of individual taste, after all), but most of its members do agree that outside of Cuba, Dominican cigars are perhaps the finest now legally available to Americans. It is arguable (particularly from people from the Dominican Republic) that the quality of cigars from that island is far superior to those from nearby Cuba. One thing is certain: Dominican cigars come in a wide range of aromas, colors and prices; cigar connoisseurs from the States will find that the selection to be found at CigarsDominican.com has something for every taste and price range.
